Drug Use

On 9 May 2007 Revd the Hon. Dr Gordon Moyes asked the Minister for Roads, representing the Minister for Police, a question without notice regarding drug use. The Minister for Police provided the following response:

New South Wales has some of the toughest drug laws in the country. High visibility police patrols under Vikings and other operations target street level drug offences on an ongoing basis.

Police drug detection dogs are also routinely deployed to locations such as dance parties, clubs, hotels and train stations where police believe there is a likelihood of drug activity, including possession and dealing offences.

In addition, the new roadside drug testing scheme tests for methamphetamines, including ecstasy, ice and speed, as well as cannabis. Police target entertainment precincts around clubs and hotels for testing. This strategy is already producing excellent results.
