Parliament of Victoria Prayer Breakfast
Last week, Dr Moyes was Guest Speaker in the Victorian Parliament when he addressed over 75 Parliamentarians and selected heads of churches. He discussed the maintenance of Christian Values in a pluralist society. It was a good opportunity of discussing the tensions that arise in a community when it is changing to a multicultural, multi-racial and a multi-religious community due to generous immigration and refugee programs. He discussed the current debates on the Abortion Bill in the Upper House, and the Artificial Reproductive Technology Bill in the Lower House, and Christian responses to both. Of particular interest was his information on how Christians should respond to keep Christian values in place. He also had an hour discussing boyhood memories of travel and choir work with the present Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, a friend from early days. His contributions were widely appreciated and largely endorsed.
Later he met with a committee of the Parliament to discuss ways of expanding the Christian presence of the Parliamentary Prayer Fellowship. Then he met with the leaders of the Parliamentary Prayer Networks in expanding their work. He then had a meeting with senior members of the CDP Victoria branch who are not happy with recent changes in the CDP Management team in NSW, and the emphasis seen at the recent Convention on the new “macro issues” announced by our “President for Life”. Elector backlash against CDP policies is causing a lot of rethinking about future directions.
Rev The Hon. Dr Gordon Moyes, A.C., M.L.C.
