Sexual Education Book - Highly Inappropriate for Children

Tuesday 05 May 2009

Rev the Hon. Dr Gordon Moyes AC MLC, an Independent Member of Parliament, has raised serious concerns with the recent release of a controversial book entitled, Where Did I Really Come From?

The publication explains how gay parents have children and includes in-depth descriptions of sexual intercourse which is being aimed at children as young as two.

“It is important for children to find out how they are created whether through IVF, surrogacy or adoption. It is vital that children know their history. To find out how we are made is intrinsic in shaping our identity.” Rev Dr Moyes said.

Rev Dr Moyes highlighted, “The book is aimed at children who do not even have the capacity to distinguish between social relationships. The book caters for a market that is simply too young to understand.”

While Dr Moyes acknowledged that although the book’s purpose is to inform children from diverse families such as same sex parents, “The issue of education is best left to the parents of the children. Parents should be the primary educators to their children and should be responsible for the teaching of their children.”

Rev Dr Moyes, a strong advocate of families, continued, “The book contains detailed descriptions of sexual intercourse and the concepts of gender and sexuality is too complicated for our children to understand. It is inappropriate to discuss complex issues to children as young as two to know about homosexuality and same sex parenting.”

Where Did I Really Come From? is part of the Learn to Include (LTI) program. LTI is an Australian not-for-profit organisation publishing inclusive children’s books. LTI’s fiction and non-fiction titles and other resources feature diverse families, including families with same-sex parents.

Rev Dr Moyes, who is also a Member of the current Legislative Council Inquiry into Bullying of Children and Young People, added “No child should ever be discriminated because his or her parents are from the same sex. The education system has a responsibility to reduce the incidence of bullying of children that come from same-sex families.” END.
