National Initiatives to support and strengthen marriage
In a joint statement released today, organisers of the National Marriage Day Breakfast (13th August) and National Marriage Week (beginning 13th September) stated that they are delighted that their independent initiatives are each responding to the urgent need for national action to strengthen Marriage.
What is National Marriage Day? National Marriage Day (13th August), an initiative of the Australian Family Association in collaboration with an increasing number of other pro-family organisations, seeks to highlight the social benefits of marriage and to lay the foundations for a renewed culture of marriage within our nation. To achieve this goal, the inaugural National Marriage Day (2009) will be celebrated with a Breakfast in the Great Hall in Parliament House, Canberra and will call for the 13th August each year to be dedicated as National Marriage Day.
To further raise the status of marriage, it is intended that each year a high profile married couple will be nominated as National Marriage Day Ambassadors. The National Marriage Day Ambassadors 2009 will be announced at the National Marriage Day Breakfast in the Great Hall, Parliament House, Canberra. More information and registration details for the National Marriage Day Breakfast are at www.marriageday.org.au
What is National Marriage Week? Marriage Week is a fast growing coalition of Christian churches, ministries, media and many others who: believe that marriage was foundational in Gods’ plan of creation; believe that marriage is between one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others; value marriage, as a binding public commitment, which becomes the foundation of healthy families, healthy children, and a healthy community; and seek to promote the value of marriage based on Judeo-Christian scripture.
The week, starting each year on the 2nd Sunday in September, promotes, celebrates and honours marriage in local communities and nationally through community and media driven events. Marriage Week was ‘visioned’ in 2007 and initiated in Sydney and elsewhere in September 2008. We welcome and support all who have the same underlying values see http://marriageweek.org.au
