National Walk to Work Day

The Pedestrian Council of Australia annually celebrates the National Walk to Work Day program, and encourages everyone in the community to make the effort to walk at least 1 kilometre to your first appointment on Friday morning the 2nd of October.

This initiative, supported by the Australian Government, every State Government, the Cancer Council, Beyond Blue, Diabetes Australia, Planet Ark and the Heart Foundation, is a health promotion awareness program that offers a good opportunity to remind everyone that through the combination of regular physical activity, such as walking, and a healthy diet, we can improve our physical, mental and social health and well-being.

Another aim of the annual Walk to Work Day is to reduce public reliance on the private motor vehicle. If we could all reduce our dependency on cars that would improve air quality greatly, since we would not be throwing off all that dirty exhaust into the air. Choosing to use public transport is also encouraged. Please consider supporting this effort by walking at least part of the way to work on Friday 2 October 2009 – for better health, and cleaner air.
