The Death Rattles of a Fragile Government Continue

What an incredible two months! It started with the announcement that a Federal election would be held. Although only just registered as a NSW political Party, Family First decided to campaign. In four weeks we had 16 candidates and teams of polling booth workers, funds raised, and two amazing Senate candidates, Greg Swane and Phil Lamb.

Last Thursday the official ‘Declaration of the Poll’ took place at the Australian Electoral Commission office in Sydney. This was only Family First’s 3rd Federal election. Family First increased its vote in the Senate by 30.62% across Australia. In NSW, our Senate vote increased by a huge 54.51% from 2007. Still not enough to get our candidate Greg Swane elected. In Victoria and South Australia our Family First were there until the last handful of votes when our preferences decided a Liberal and a DLP member became senators.

Family First is now the fifth largest political Party in Australia after the four major parties. We are the only other Party to have three members in two State Parliaments and another in the Australian Senate. Two others almost made it.

Compared with the other values based Christian party our Senate vote in NSW increased by 54.51% while theirs decreased by 1.8%. Their National Senate vote decreased from 104,705 to 74,492 while Family First national Senate vote went from 204, 788 to 216,876 with another 246,539 House of Representative votes. Family First has truly come of age.

But now in the next two and a half months we will see the greatest Parliamentary assault on pro-life and Christian family relationships ever experienced in 190 years of the Legislative Councils existence.

Everything we have fought against and feared is on the agenda of the NSW Parliament. I will refer to half a dozen serious issues. These Parliamentary Bills of the NSW Parliament are the death rattles of a dying State Government.

The alliance between the secular Greens and the extreme Socialist left wing of the Labor Party know that there will be a change of Government at the next Election, so the last possible chance of their reform agenda being voted in the House lies in the next two and a half months. This is their last chance for at least 10 years. They are the death rattles of a dying Government.

The barrage has already started, and we who are pro-family and pro-life have already lost the first battle.

We lost the battle against same sex adoption. The membership of Family First were vocal on this issue. Hundreds of people contacted me, and thousands of others have signed petitions regarding this issue. I represented their views as strongly as I could. My speech in full is on my website www.gordonmoyes.com.

More pieces of legislation before Christmas will attack Christian rights and beliefs. It is time every Christian became active at every level of political involvement, in prayer and financial support.

The issue of easing child pornography and abuse restriction is there. There is a Bill to legalize assisted suicide of the ill, the elderly and the disabled. There is a Motion to de-criminalize abortion. This month the Labor Government seeks approval to indefinitely continue the Kings Cross Injecting Room. Next is the Surrogacy Same Sex Bill. Then there will be a move to replace Special Religious Education with Secular Ethics Classes.

The Greens and the Labor Party have united because they know if they cannot pass this agenda in the next two and a half months it will be a least ten years before it can come up again. The death rattles of the dying Government is designed to get Green Party preferences for the next NSW State Election on 26th March, 2011

In Parliament we have a fragile few who uphold pro-life and pro-family values. We are always prepared. Always active. Always determined. I am the only pro-life and pro-family member of the Legislative Council coming up for re-election. If I am not elected, our numbers will fall to an unsustainable level.

I ask you to make sure this doesn’t happen. The only way this can happen is for you and your friends and organizations to vote ONE for the pro-life candidate then the other parties of your choice. We need churches to alert their members to the crisis and to be regular in prayer. We need people become members of Family First or to help on Polling Day, and we urgently need finance to make our campaign effective.

REV THE HON DR GORDON MOYES AC MLC
