World AIDS Day

1 December 2008 marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day. In 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the first World AIDS Day in an effort to raise public awareness about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS. The day is also an opportunity to highlight the need for continued development of education and prevention initiatives.

Evangelist Reverend Richard Cizik’s Visit to Australia

Reverend Richard Cizik, an outstanding American evangelist dubbed by Time Magazine as ‘one of the 100 most influential people in the world’, came to NSW Parliament on Thursday 12 November 2008 to address parliamentarians, concerned citizens, church and business leaders on the issues of ‘creation care’. Rev Cizik is the VP of Governmental Affairs for the US National Association of Evangelicals.

Poverty and Justice Bible

Now the British and Foreign Bible Society has released the Poverty and Justice Bible. Members of the UK Parliament were presented with the first of these Bibles to highlight more than 2,000 verses reflecting God’s attitude to poverty and justice. This Bible highlights God’s heart for tackling poverty and establishing justice. Challenging the notion that the Bible is an outdated rulebook, it shows that, on the biggest issues of our day, the Bible got there first.

Dr Moyes signs petition that everyone has the right to education

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to education.” Consistent with this, Article 6 of the United Nations Basic Principles for the Treatment of Prisoners states that “All prisoners shall have the right to take part in cultural activities and education aimed at the full development of the human personality.”

Former Christian Focus on Society speaker elected to the UN Committee

Former dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Sydney and previous guest speaker at Christian Focus on Society, Professor Ron McCallum AO, has been elected as one of 12 experts to the first monitoring committee for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Professor McCallum, who is an expert in industrial law, is the only Australian currently serving on a UN treaty body.

Dr Moyes supports Anglicare during Carers’ Week

On Wednesday 22 October, Dr Moyes attended a bipartisan briefing on Anglicare hosted by Tanya Gadiel MP and Mike Baird MP. The purpose of the briefing was to officially launch the National Carers’ Week from 19-25 October to promote and raise awareness of the valuable role that carers play in our community.
