A weekly column by Rev Dr Gordon Moyes, Superintendent of Wesley Mission.

Spring Fair is the major fundraising event for the work of Wesley Mission. Spring Fair began in the early twentieth century and is one of the longest running fundraising events in Australia. The volunteers collect money throughout the year and their activities culminate in the three days of Spring Fair, which is held here at Wesley Centre.

On Friday March 23rd Spring Fair 2001 was launched in Wesley Centre. Our Guest of Honour at the dinner was Heather Turland, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist ‘Marathon Mum’ who brought us a very inspiring message. Soloist Martene Grimson provided the entertainment for the night and the Master of Ceremonies was our very own Martin Johnson, Senior Manager Communications.

An all time record number of 38 candidates have volunteered to fundraise for us this year. For the first time we have the Wesley Uniting Employment Centres joining in with nine candidates. So far Wesley Uniting Employment, Illawara, have already raised $2,500 from one event! A record number of 360 guests attended this dinner each paying $23.50. All monies raised goes towards the support of the Centre’s candidate.

I would like to request you to make a note in your diary that the opening of Spring Fair takes place on Wednesday 26 September 2001 in the Wesley Theatre, 220 Pitt Street, Sydney, commencing at 2pm.

Special thanks to Noelene McGarry and her team who have done such a magnificent job to achieve this record number of candidates and guests. The candidates each year are awarded holidays, dinners and electrical appliances etc as rewards for their fundraising efforts with the top prize of an overseas holiday for two.

Mother Teresa once said “The whole work is only a drop in the ocean but if we don’t put the drop in, the ocean would be one drop less.”

So this Spring Fair think of how you can help make a difference to our community. Please contact Noelene McGarry our Spring Fair Manager on 9263 5410 if you are able to assist in any way.
