Rev Dr Gordon Moyes The Superintendent Writes
A weekly column by Rev Dr Gordon Moyes, Superintendent of Wesley Mission.
December 9th, 2001

Beverley and I are busy all this month with telling the good news that Jesus Christ has come among us to save us from our sins. We did that in our great public Christian worship service held last Friday and Saturday nights at Darling Harbour. We sang the carols, prayed, read the scripture and spoke the Word about the true meaning on Christmas. With our radio audience, we covered many tens of thousands of people. And we provided some good entertainment, music, dancing and fireworks as well. Thank you to all who helped us in this Gospel outreach. Our special radio and television programs likewise tell out the Christmas message.

But each day, seven days a week, various Centres in Wesley Mission are holding Christmas parties for residents or clients, volunteers and family members, staff and helpers. We attend as many as is humanly possible. It is wonderful to speak of the real significance of Christmas and to thank those who help us. It is a great opportunity for us to meet our Wesley family, some of whom have been friends for more than twenty years. Those meetings are very precious. As the years have gone by more and more people have joined with us and we have learned many thousands of names of friends. (We are often asked how we know so many people by name. The answer is that every week, we both determine to learn the names of people new to us. We ask them, repeat the names and of a Sunday night, usually after midnight, we go over the names with each other to make sure we have them right!)

On Christmas Day we meet with crowds of people. We have breakfast and morning tea with the homeless and lunch in Wesley Centre with a happy group of two hundred or more who accept this invitation to lunch with us: if you are on your own on Christmas Day, come and join with Beverley and myself and some of our Wesley Family as we celebrate Christmas together. You must however book with Wesley Centre staff at the Information Desk 9263 5300, so we can cater for you. And the catering is magnificent!

Do all you can to tell other people the true message of Christmas, and make sure everyone is included within our family celebrations.
